Methi Matar Malai

This recipe is a creamy vegetarian indian style curry that goes perfectly with varieties of indian breads and even basmati based rice recipes.

Methi - Fenugreek Leaves

Matar - Green Peas

Malai - Fresh cream

As the name suggests the recipe is a combination of fenugreek leaves, green peas and a touch of fresh thick cream.


  • Ghee & Vegetable oil ( use only cooking oil is you are vegan)

  • 1 Bunch Fenugreek leaves

  • 1 Large onion - sliced

  • 2 green chillies

  • 2 Tsp Ginger garlic paste

  • salt for taste

  • 1-2 tbsp Roasted Peanuts or Raw Cashews (avoid peanuts in case you are allergic)

  • 2 medium size tomatoes

  • 1/4 Cup water

  • 1 Tsp Kashmiri Red chilli Powder

  • 1/2 Tsp Cumin Powder

  • 1 1/2 Tsp Garam Masala Powder

  • 1/2 Tsp of cumin seeds

  • 2 pc cardamom pods

  • 2 pc cinnamon sticks

  • 1 Cup Boiled Green peas

  • 1-2 Tbsp Fresh Cream ( can also use more cashew paste for vegans )

  • 1 Tsp Chopped Coriander Leaves

For Cooking fenugreek:

1.One Bunch of fenugreek leaves.

2. Finely chop them. I used only the leafy part and not the stems at the bottom as it can be a bit bitter for my taste.

3. Take a pan. Heat it up

4. Take 2 tbsp of Ghee or Cooking oil

5. Sautè it well and cook for 8-10 mins until the leaves have shrunk and released it’s moisture you can even add a pinch of salt to speed up the process. Make sure the raw smell is gone.

For the gravy:

  1. 1 Tbsp ghee & 1Tbsp Cooking Oil ( I used Olive Oil )

  2. 1 large Onion finely sliced

  3. cook until slightly brown

  4. salt to taste

  5. 2 Tsp Ginger garlic paste

  6. 2 green Chillies - slit

  7. sauté until the raw smell is gone

  8. Add in the roasted peanuts.

  9. sauté it well.

  10. add in the chopped tomatoes.

  11. sauté for 2-3 minutes

  12. Add around1/4th cup of water

  13. mix it all

  14. cover and cook for 5-6 minutes

  15. Add in the chilli powder, cumin powder and garam masala.

  16. turn off the flame. Let the mixture cool down.

  17. Blend the cooled down mixture into a speed blender until you get a fine paste.

Final Steps:

  1. Heat a pan

  2. add 2 Tbsp cooking oil

  3. Add 1/2 Tsp cumin seeds.

  4. 2pc cardamom pods

  5. 2pcs Cinnamon Sticks

  6. Add in the blended mixture.

  7. mix it all well.

  8. Add in the green peas and cooked fenugreek leaves.

  9. Add little water as needed.

  10. Mix in the fresh cream on low flame.

  11. Cook for another 2-3 mins.

  12. Turn off the flame and its ready to serve.

Garnishing Tips:

  1. a little chopped coriander leaves or mint leaves.

  2. 1 tbsp of more fresh cream
